Is that Football? — Part I
No!
By Ed Hickland
September 7th, 2010

Do we need Sole Survivor on the football field? It was described as just an "isolated incident" when the quarterback of a Division I team was seriously choked by an opponent.

Click the title to read Part I. Find out what happened in the Ohio State-Wisconsin game of 2004 and how a sport can degrade into a deadly game. In Part II, Ed lets us in on what we can do to stop this nonsense.

So You're a New, High School Soccer Official
What do you do now?
By Don Boss
September 6th, 2010

St. Louis is a hotbed of Soccer. So, what's it like being a new official there? How do you prepare yourself for that first season?

Truthfully, much of what you hear starting out fits officials regardless of the sport they work: Know the game, get into position, handle yourself with dignity. Don's going to talk about two different ones that are also always part of the sermon.

You won't get hurt going over them again.

As usual, you have to click the title.

Two Things NOT to Do Behind the Plate
By Carl Childress
September 6th, 2010

There are lots of things you can do wrong at a baseball game. Right?

You're U1 in Position A, and you turn too soon to cover a steal of second. Bingo: nailed in the back of the head by the catcher's throw.

You're the UIC. You remove your mask too soon on a foul popup and get hit by the catcher's mask.

You're the UIC, and you look up to locate a foul, followed by the catcher locating YOU as he's running for the catch. That will be followed by your locating the ground.

Or maybe you're anywhere on the field and you forgot your Under Armour. That's particularly hazardous in deep South Texas.

Inside you will locate two more mistakes: One is caused by laziness; the other, by pride.

The football field is a sanctuary to those of us who have chosen to be officials. Why, with this love of the game, are we occasionally caught off-guard and experience "trouble in paradise"?

Log in and read his suggestions for avoiding such troubles.

Thinking outside the box
By Walt Brower
September 3rd, 2010

What would you do if you had to assign two games — by six one evening – but nobody on your roster was available? Of course: Help the homeless and teach your son the value of money.
